A Washington state deputy passed away on Wednesday after suffering from gun injuries in a shootout with a man wanted for a past assault, a report said, citing authorities.
According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, the 35-year-old officer, Dominique “Dom” Calata, was one of two deputies shot during the mayhem that occurred on Tuesday afternoon at a mobile-home park near Spanaway, the Seattle Times reported.
The two deputies were on the hunt for the suspect, Jeremy Dayton, who was wanted for second-degree assault, according to the report. Dayton reportedly opened fire at the officers with the officers also firing back. Calata and his partner Sgt. Rich Scaniffe, 45, were injured in the shooting. Dayton was also killed during the shootout.
Calata, who had joined the force in 2016, died from his injuries on Wednesday, authorities said. He left behind his wife and a young son.
Scaniffe, an Army veteran who had been with the sheriff’s department for 21 years, underwent surgery and was said to be in stable condition.
