A Houston, Texas man is facing an upgraded murder charge after authorities initially charged him with moving a dead woman’s body, police said.
Last month, 60-year-old Miguel Angel Moreno was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence after authorities said he found a dead woman’s body in a cardboard box at his apartment complex and then allegedly moved it to a dumpster in the parking lot, according to Houston police.
Surveillance camera captured Moreno using a handcart to transport the victim’s body, which was still bleeding, resulting in the initial charge, Fox 26 of Houston reported.
According to court documents, Moreno claims an unknown person broke into his apartment and placed the box inside his room. The box had blood coming out of it, Moreno said. According to the documents, he did not call law enforcement because he was afraid of getting into legal trouble, Fox 26 reported.
According to the report, authorities have since upgraded the charge to murder.
A coroner’s report determined the victim had broken bones in her face and that her cause of death was blunt force trauma. Her identity is yet to be released.
