A 59-year-old Pennsylvania man has been arrested and charged with murder after authorities said his 96-year-old mother was found beaten to death inside a Philadelphia apartment.
Officials said police responded to the 4200 block of Houghton Street on Sunday afternoon, just after 1 p.m., for a disturbance.
Upon arrival, responding officers found a 96-year-old woman, identified as Bertha Johnston, dead in a living room inside a residence. According to authorities, the woman sustained blunt force trauma to her head and body and died at the scene.
Police said the murder weapon was found at the location and her son, 59-year-old Gary Johnston, was apprehended. He was charged with murder and possessing instruments of a crime.
No details regarding what lead up to the woman’s death were given.
