A woman is dead after her vehicle plunged into the Niagara River on Wednesday afternoon. Pictures from the incident show the car was close to the brink of the top of Niagara Falls.
A U.S. Coast Guard diver, who was lowered from a helicopter, recovered the woman from her vehicle, the New York State Parks Police said. It was unclear if the woman was alive when she was recovered from the submerged car.
According to the NYSPP, the woman was in her 60’s and resided around the area of the river in Niagara Falls, New York. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Photos and videos circulating on Twitter show the car submerged in the rapids.
About 11:50 a.m on Wednesday, cops said they were notified of a black vehicle in the river. The car was only 50 yards from the brink of the American Falls, according to the NYSPP. It was not clear how the car got into the river.
The Niagara County Sheriff helicopter, in addition to drones, were both used to determine if any individuals were inside the car after witnesses said they hadn’t seen anyone exit the vehicle, according to the spokesperson.
Officials from the NYSPP are currently working to remove the car from the river, and an investigation into how the vehicle got into the river is underway.
