A man miraculously survived after plunging nine stories from a New Jersey high-rise and landed on a BMW, officials and a witness said. The incident occurred on Wednesday at 10:20 a.m. According to a witness, the 31-year-old man crashed through the roof of the black Beemer 330i parked below 26 Journal Square. According to an onlooker, Christina Smith, the man stood up with his right arm dangling at his side and asked, “What happened?” The New York Post reported.
Christina told the Post that she was shocked after hearing a big boom and didn’t think it was a human at first. Christina, who was strolling to a nearby McDonald’s, said It was like being in a movie. The confused man was like, ‘What happened?’ And was like, You fell,” she said. Christina believed the man’s fluffy jacket also may have shielded him from more profound wounds.
She immediately contacted 911, then took some jaw-dropping photos and videos of the aftermath. The graphic videos showed the man screaming in pain with upper-body injuries. Also, in the video, a face mask strap can still be seen dangling from the mas’s ear, despite falling roughly 100 feet.
According to Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione, a Jersey City spokeswoman, the man, who jumped from an open window on the ninth floor, was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance. He remained in critical condition as of Thursday, Kimberly said.
Workers in the building have confirmed that the man didn’t work in the building, and it was unclear why he was there. On Thursday afternoon, he wasn’t cooperative as he refused to provide cops with information about himself. A source familiar with the case said the man refused to give cops his name.
After falling through the sunroof into the car, the man reportedly climbed out and fell on the ground. When he was struggling to get up, witnesses tried to get him to stay down, telling him, ‘You don’t know how hurt you are,’ said a 50-year-old Mark Bordeaux who worked in the building and witnessed the aftermath of the incident.
According to Bordeaux, the man remained on the ground until the police and ambulances came. However, he kept telling helpers to leave him alone that he wanted to die. Despite his arms being broken, the man was conscious and moving, Bordeaux said.
