A Louisiana man, after being apprehended as a suspect, has confessed to killing his pregnant girlfriend and throwing her toddler son off a bridge, police said. The man faces two counts of first-degree murder charges after his confession.
Brynnen Murphy, 20, is being held without bond, and prosecutors said Murphy will face additional charges related to the death of the unborn child.
According to the Baton Rouge sheriff’s office, Kaylen Johnson, 24, and her 2-year-old son Kaden Johnson were last seen alive on March 5. They were found dead in two separate locations on Monday, the station reported.
Investigators believe Murphy dumped both bodies at the locations about a week ago, WBRZ reported. Sgt. L’Jean McKneely Jr., a spokesperson for the station, confirmed to The Advocate that Murphy, who turned himself in on Monday, is not Kaden Johnson’s father.
According to the outlet, Murphy admitted to shooting Kaylen Johnson, who was heavily pregnant, multiple times and dumping her body before driving the child, who was still alive, to the Central Thruway where he threw him over the bridge. Murphy heard the toddler crying as he drove away, sources told Mag Grand.
According to a preliminary autopsy, the toddler likely died from hypothermia. However, the coroner’s analysis is not complete, the station reported.
Kaylen Johnson’s family members who first reported her and her son missing over the weekend, confirmed to investigators that she was six months pregnant at the time of her disappearance.
Deputies did not say whether or not Murphy told them about a motive for his crime.
