Families are having to adapt to their kids getting an education from home due to the impact of the Coronavirus. With this change comes a critical need for affordable desks.
There are a large number of families that can’t get desks for their kids to study at home and this leads to a tough learning environment for kids who are already trying to move forward in new, difficult, and stressful learning conditions.
With the massive shift to at home learning, desks are often out of stock, increasingly overpriced due to demand, and many families that have multiple children simply can’t afford the cost of buying desks for each of their children.
Chai Hansanuwat got laid off from his software job so he started building shelves for sale. It occurred to him that there were lots of kids learning from home without proper desks and he had extra wood so he put out a call to anyone whose kids needed desks using #donationdesks on his IG page . Not only did he receive lots of request but some 25 local carpenters/builders joined in and together they’ve donated over 400 desks.
He’s also had people donate supplies. Chai tells Good News Movement that he’s received so many grateful responses including “one kid who gave me a home depot gift card, then reached into his pocket and gave me all the change he had and said thank you.”
“So I am really hoping that this word gets out and that other people with tools and the means to do it say, ‘Hey, you know what, I can do that, too.’ Let’s get some desks for kids,'” Hansanuwat told ABC7.
“Let me put it this way: In my technology job, it’s eight or nine hours a day — meetings, doing some code and that was my day,” Hansanuwat told the Washington Post. “Now, we’re talking about 12 hours a day, sometimes more. Constant working. I’m tired, I’m worn out, but I’m so happy.”
