A screwdriver-wielding Pennsylvania man was shot by officers after walking into the 39th Police District building in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning, according to a report.
The incident unfolded at approximately 9:30 a.m. inside the district headquarters located on the 2200 block of West Hunting Park Avenue, FOX 29 reported.
Local sources say the male suspect barged into the operations room holding a screwdriver and began stabbing an officer with it.
A second officer got involved in the scuffle and tried to disarm the suspect as he swung the screwdriver. During the altercation, a female officer who was inside the operations room discharged her service weapon, striking the suspect in the torso.
He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to the outlet.
One police officer reportedly suffered minor injuries to the back of his head after being stabbed by the deranged suspect, and a second officer also suffered an injury to his elbow. Both officers are reported to be in stable condition, according to FOX 29′ Steve Keeley.
According to Keeley’s report, a police officer was working inside the operations room and had walked through a secure door to speak with a 23-year-old suspect. When the door was opened, the suspect was able to access the operations room and began attacking the officer, Philadelphia Police Sergeant Eric Gripp says.
Gripp says the entire incident lasted less than a minute from the time the suspect lunged through the door until the time he was shot. The investigation is ongoing with the officer-involved shooting investigations unit.
