Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said during a press conference over the weekend that the Sunshine State would go through a “Cold War” if Democrat Stacey Abrams wins Georgia State’s 2022 governor’s race.
DeSantis said Florida State would be caught between far-left leaders as he likened Abrams’ liberal policies to those of communist Cuber.
‘If Stacey Abrams is elected governor of Georgia, I just want to be honest, that will be a Cold War between Florida and Georgia at that point,’ DeSantis said.
‘I mean, I can’t have Castro to my south and Abrams to my north. That’d be a disaster. So, I hope you guys take care of that and we end up in good shape,’ he told Georgia voters.
DeSantis was referring to Cold War leader Fidel Castro even though Cuba is currently led by President Miguel Diaz-Canal.
A spokesman for DeSantis’s office later explained to Newsweek that the governor was simply making an analogy to the differences between how DeSantis governs Florida and how Abrams would run Georgia if she wins.
‘If Stacey Abrams wins the governorship of Georgia, we know that her approach to leadership will involve more heavy-handed government, taxes and bureaucrat influence,’ the spokesperson said.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, criticized Abrams for being too-far left saying Georgia would be a disaster under her leadership.
‘With Stacey Abrams in control, Georgia would have shut down, students would have been barred from their classrooms, and woke politics would be the law of the land and the lesson plan in our schools,’ Kemp wrote on Twitter.
‘Her far-left agenda of open borders, gun confiscation, high taxes, and anti-law enforcement policies don’t reflect who we are as Georgians.’
