Authorities in Florida are searching for a 15-year-old girl who disappeared after contacting one of her classmates and told her she was being followed on her way to school, cops said on Monday.
According to investigators, the missing girl, Saige Stiles, didn’t show up at her Treasure Coast High School in Port St. Lucie on Monday morning after calling her friend and telling her she was being followed.
The concerned friend called 911 and reported that Stiles might be in danger. When first responders arrived at the location Stiles’ friend had given them, they found the teen’s backpack and cell phone on the sidewalk but the teen was nowhere to be found.
Cops immediately flooded the area and were able to locate surveillance footage that showed Stiles walking behind some houses at around 7:40 a.m.
“[The teen] did not appear to be in any immediate danger or distress at the time,” police said.
Investigators have not yet located Stiles and it is unclear if she was kidnapped or if she ran away. Detectives said they had spoken with the missing girl’s father and the friend who called them, and both are cooperating with the investigation.
“This is still a fluid situation and we are actively searching the area and attempting to find Saige,” police said Monday afternoon.
