A driver in Florida fell asleep behind the wheel and hit two men who were changing the tire of their car by the roadside, officials said.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the two victims were killed on Sunday on Interstate 275 in Tampa.
A 73-year-old man had pulled over onto the road’s shoulder after the left front tire of his vehicle blew out, WFTV reported, citing troopers. A short time later, a 30-year-old friend of the man arrived to help him change the tire.
The two men were reportedly on the driver’s side of the car when they were crushed by a car driven by a 36-year-old. Troopers said the driver had fallen asleep while driving.
The 30-year-old man who was changing the tire was pronounced dead at the scene. The older man was rushed to a hospital, where he later died, according to troopers. A 69-year-old female passenger in one of the victim’s vehicles was not wounded.
The sleeping driver did not suffer any injury in the crash, the report said. The accident remains under investigation.
