The devastated father of the 18-year-old boy, who died when the hole he and his sister were digging in the sand at a New Jersey beach on Tuesday collapsed on them, remembered him as “quirky” and true to himself.
Levi Calverly, 18, was pronounced dead after first responders pulled him from the gaping pit at Toms River’s Ocean Beach 3. His 17-year-old sister was wounded in the sand collapse but fortunately survived.
“Levi was himself,” his father, Todd Calverly, said in a statement sent to The New York Post on Wednesday. “He was odd. He was quirky. He was not real concerned with what others thought.”
The grieving father also told the outlet that Levi was a devout Christian and “knew Jesus Christ.” The teen was very involved in church activities and played the drums in a young adult worship band.
According to the dad, his son was a “tech nut” and loved computer programming
“The truth is that Scripture says that all our days are numbered,” Todd added. “That there is nothing we can do to add a single hour to our life. He knew that.”
According to Toms River police, Levi and his younger sister had spent time digging a deep hole while having fun at the beach during their trip from Maine to New Jersey.
At around 4 p.m., the hole caved in on the siblings, killing Levi and trapping his sister, police said. It took first responders almost three hours to pull Levi’s body out of the sand, according to officials.
Exclusive images show the Caverly family having fun in the sun just moments before tragedy struck.
The last known photos of the Caverly family apparently show the 18-year-old victim, Levi, digging the deep pit with his 17-year-old sister as their parents, Angela and Todd, watched at Toms River’s Ocean Beach 3, according to a beach-goer who snapped the shot.
