In a new documentary on Wednesday, Pope Francis called for the creation of civil union laws for same-sex couples, which breaks from the Catholic Church’s official teaching. And Pope Francis has become the first Pope in History to support civil union for same sex couples.
British singer Sir Elton John is one among others who support the Pope’s decision. The 73-year-old singer expressed his joy over the news on Instagram, thanking the Pope for a job well done.
“Thank-you @franciscus for your endorsement of same sex civil unions. My civil union and subsequent marriage to @davidfurnish has brought us immeasurable happiness and security. Giving your blessing to same sex civil unions is a major step towards equality, and a foundation for which countless others can enjoy the same protections and happiness. God bless you.”
John began a relationship with David Furnish in 1993, a former advertising executive and now filmmaker originally from Toronto, Canada. On 21 December 2005 (the day the Civil Partnership Act came into force), John and Furnish were among the first couples to form a civil partnership in the United Kingdom, which was held at the Windsor Guildhall.
After gay marriage became legal in the United Kingdom in March 2014, John and Furnish married in Windsor, Berkshire, on 21 December 2014, the ninth anniversary of their civil partnership.
They have two sons together.
