In the developed countries, issues of road traffic accident seems to be rarely talked about. This is because there has been standard principles laid down and regulated by state policies to guide drivers. The United States doesn’t joke with such policies as there are driving instructions slated out by each state in the United States which every driver must adhere strictly to.
For example, some general laws and regulations guiding driving in the United States include that all occupants in a vehicle must wear a seat belt, right turn is permitted at red traffic lights, but if the driver has stopped, unless signed otherwise. Also, drivers should always use indicator lights when turning and drivers are to carry with them, every time when they drive, a valid drivers licence with duly registered insurance documents and other relevant documents for the car.
Apart from these general regulations, there are state guidelines for speed. So a driver shouldn’t drive above a certain speed and if he does, he faces sanctions by the state.
However, irrespective of how stringent some rules are, there will always be breakers of these rules. And so was the case for Kamran Khan, a 29 year old, who was reported to have had some cannabis circulating in his bloodstream before the unfortunate collision of his car with a Peugeot 508 car. The collision was so forceful that his Audi RS6 sent the Peugeot into a religious centre, injuring about eight people in the process.
In a CCTV footage which showed how the accident occurred, an adult and a child was seen flung into the air after they were hit by one of the vehicles.
About five people in the Peugeot, a baby inclusive, were injured and one female was severely injured to the point of needing emergency surgery and another female who was just walking down the lane had a serious foot injury.
Though Khan pleaded guilty to the charges laid against him, he was sentenced to prison by Leeds Crown Court some days ago.
Khan had been previously convicted for driving while on drugs and now, has also been banned from driving for seventy eight months. After the court hearing, a West Yorkshire police officer, PC Steve said : ‘While sentencing him, Judge Mairs repeatedly talked about Khan’s flagrant disregard for traffic laws.
‘On that rainy day back in September 2019, Khan chose to drive over twice the speed limit and caused a crash which injured multiple adults and children. ‘It is sheer luck that only two people were seriously injured and that the consequences were not even more serious. ‘The court were told Khan had a previous conviction for a drug driving offence and had cannabis in his system at the time of this collision.’
The police officer went on to let the public know that other people who behave like Khan will also be dealt by the law and be convicted according to the severity of the act.
