A California woman has been criticized on social media over a TikTok video that shows her accusing a black shopper of stealing her cellphone in a store – only to find the phone in her own handbag.
The unidentified woman was shopping in Spencer’s store inside the Sunrise Mall in Sacramento when she told a shop assistant that someone had stolen her phone.
A witness, simply identified as Kinley, claiming to be the partner of the black man, recorded the incident which she shared on TikTok.
In the now-viral video, the accuser searches through her bag multiple times and could not find her phone, while accusing Kinley of theft at the branch of Spencer’s.
‘Can you call it, because she won’t let us call it,’ says the person who is filming to the assistant, who attempts to mediate.
‘Well, he could have turned off the ringer,’ the woman who is making the accusation replies.
‘Oh my God – do you want him to get f naked, lady?’ the person filming says.
‘I really need my phone,’ the accuser says.
‘Do you want to pat him down?’ the cameraperson asks sarcastically.
The woman continues to accuse Kinley of taking her phone, saying: ‘I had it, and then you walked right behind me, and you took it.’
Kinley responds: ‘I did not take it.’
The shop assistant gives his phone to the woman so that she can call her number. When the woman dialed her number, her phone rang inside her handbag, which means she did not search for the phone very well before making the accusation.
After finding her phone, the woman offers a sincere apology to the victim.
‘I’m so sorry,’ she tells Kinley. ‘I apologize.’
‘F*** off. No you’re not,’ Kinley’s partner replies.
Kinley’s partner took to TikTok after the incident and wrote: ‘My husband’s first time in 28 years. He grew up in the south too. Not a month in Cali, and this happens.’
