Matthew Rushin, a young black autistic man who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a car crash that injured two people has been granted a pardon by the Governor of Virginia.
Matthew Rushin, pleaded guilty on January 4, 2019 to two counts of malicious wounding and felony hit and run, a car crash that put 72-year-old George Cusick in a coma for nearly two months. A spokeswoman for the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, said a police officer and another victim who survived the crash heard Rushin saying he was trying to kill himself.
The Rushin Family and Airington Law took to Instagram on Monday to announce the good news as Rushin has been granted a partial pardon by the State Governor.
“The Rushin Family and Airington Law are happy to announce that Matthew Rushin has been granted a pardon by Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia. Matthew is a 22-year-old man with autism who was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison after a serious unintentional traffic accident. The pardon provides for Matthew’s release in early 2021.”
