BLM is supporting Jussie Smollett, who’s on trial for allegedly staging a hate crime attack, because “we can never believe the police,” a founder of Black Lives Matter said in a statement.
In a statement on Tuesday, Director of BLM Grassroots and Co-Founder of BLM Los Angeles, Dr. Melina Abdullah said: “As abolitionists, we approach situations of injustice with love and align ourselves with our community,” Dr. Melina Abdullah, Director of BLM Grassroots and Co-Founder of BLM Los Angeles.
“In an abolitionist society, this trial would not be taking place, and our communities would not have to fight and suffer to prove our worth. In our commitment to abolition, we can never believe police, especially the Chicago Police Department (CPD) over Jussie Smollett, a Black man who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom,” Abdullah continued with the statement.
The 39-year-old former Empire actor was charged with six felony counts of disorderly conduct for claiming that two men attacked and hit him as they yelled anti-gay, racist remarks in Chicago in January 2019.
Prosecutors in the case have said that Smollett planned the fake attack with his two associates, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, to get attention. Smollett has repeatedly denied all allegations.
While Jurors in the case began deliberating on Wednesday and are set to resume on Thursday morning, Legal experts have predicted the jury’s decision after Jussie Smollett’s ‘bizarre’ testimony.
