Former President Barack Obama delivered a blistering account of his successor’s first four years in office in Philadelphia, arguing that President Donald Trump has proved he is “incapable of taking the job seriously” and has shown no interest in “helping anybody but himself and his friends.”
I am asking you to believe in Joe’s ability, and Kamala’s ability, to lead this country out of these dark times and help us build back better. Obama told Americans.
“We can’t just imagine a better future; we’ve got to fight for it. We’ve got to outhustle the other side. We’ve got to vote like never before and leave no doubt.
Make a plan right now for how you’re going to get involved and vote. Do it as early as you can and tell your family and friends how they can vote, too. Don’t stop with Joe and Kamala – make sure you vote all the way down the ticket. And if we pour all our effort into these 13 days; if we vote up and down the ticket like never before; then we will elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. And we will leave no doubt about what this country we love stands for.”
The event is Obama’s first stump speech for his former vice president, a welcome sight to Democrats who see the former president as Joe Biden’s most potent character witness and a key factor in encouraging Black men, Latinos and younger voters to turn out and vote.
Obama’s speech represented his most direct attacks on Trump to date, with the former Democratic leader leveling both substantive critiques — like questioning Trump’s tax policy and handling of the coronavirus pandemic — and personal barbs, jabbing at shrinking ratings for the President’s speeches and town halls.
Donald Trump has responded to Barack Obama’s speech saying the former president underestimated him in 2016. “I think the only one, the only one more unhappy than crooked Hillary that night was Barack Hussein Obama,” Trump said.
