Former president Obama shares his mom’s favorite quote as he recount in his book A Promised Land, which is set for release Nov. 17.
“As I recount in my book, A Promised Land, my mother, Ann Dunham, was strong, smart, and marched to her own beat. For her, the world offered endless opportunities for moral instruction. My sister Maya and I got early lessons about the struggle for civil rights, the impact of poverty on people around the world, and the importance of respecting other cultures and considering other points of view. My mother believed that power came not from putting people down but rather through lifting them up. And she was always certain that in the face of injustice and humanity’s more primal impulses, logic and progress would always prevail. “The world is complicated, Bar,” she used to say. “That’s why it’s interesting.” Obama wrote on Instagram Thursday as he shared a throwback photo.”
It has been obvious that Obama is not just a politician, he is as fine a writer as they come, his focus may be more political than personal, but when he does write about his family it is with a beauty close to nostalgia.
Obama’s book took longer. He started writing ‘A Promised Land‘ shortly after leaving office, working on it at home in Washington, D.C.
“There’s no feeling like finishing a book, and I’m proud of this one,” Mr. Obama said in a statement. “I’ve spent the last few years reflecting on my presidency, and in ‘A Promised Land’ I’ve tried to provide an honest accounting of my presidential campaign and my time in office: the key events and people who shaped it, my take on what I got right and the mistakes I made, and the political, economic, and cultural forces that my team and I had to confront then — and that as a nation we are grappling with still.”
