Alabama corrections officer Vicky White, who escaped the Lauderdale County jail with inmate Casey White and led investigators on an 11-day manhunt, gave the murder suspect special treatment during his time behind bars, a recent report said.
Vicky White, 56, allegedly gave inmate Casey White “extra food” and showed favoritism toward him, Sheriff Rick Singleton told The Washington Post.
On April 29, Vicky, an assistant director of corrections at Lauderdale County Detention Center, escaped from the jail with inmate Casey White. The pair, who are not related, are said to have had a “special relationship” and to have been in the midst of a “jailhouse romance.”
Armed with guns, cash and wigs, the pair were able to hide from investigators for eleven days before they led federal and local law enforcement on a chase from Evansville’s Motel 41 where they were staying, according to officials.
Vicky White shot herself at some point after her car rolled over during the ensuing police chase. Casey White was taken into custody in stable condition. The autopsy examination was completed on Tuesday and determined she died by suicide.
After his arrest on Monday, Casey told investigators that Vicky White was his “only friend … in the world,” according to the Washington Post, which cited the local district attorney.
On Tuesday, Casey, who was serving a 75-year sentence for a slew of crimes from 2015, including carjacking, and a home invasion, was extradited from Indiana to Florence, Alabama, where he appeared before a judge before he was transferred to William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility. He has been charged with first-degree escape.
In the months prior to the escape, Vicky sold her home for a very cheap price and allegedly had about $90,000 in cash when she and Casey fled on April 29, being her last day before retirement.
