A 23-year-old Chicago culinary arts student was robbed at gunpoint and shot three times in an upscale neighborhood on Friday morning, authorities said.
The robbery happened on the 1300 block of West Webster Avenue in Lincoln Park around 3:05 a.m., according to the Chicago Police Department.
The victim was later identified as Dakotah Earley, a culinary arts student.
“What happened to my brother was a senseless act of violence,” Earley’s brother, DaShawn Earley, told Fox News Digital in a statement. “He was shot and left to die over a bag and a cellphone. We have to stop treating peoples lives like they are nothing. He has a family who loves him and wants more than anything for him to pull through. We are praying he makes it and that we get justice for those who committed this heinous act.”
Chicago police responded to a call reporting that an individual was shot in Lincoln Park. Upon arrival, responding officers found Earley on the ground with two gunshot wounds to his back and one gunshot wound to his head.
Video footage of the incident obtained by FOX32 shows a gunman hiding behind a wall as the victim walks on the sidewalk in the direction of the suspect. The robber then appears from behind the wall and holds the victim at gunpoint, demanding his property.
At first, the victim acts as if he wants to comply but then begins to fight back against the robber. The two eventually land on the ground with the thief on top of the victim. A second suspect is also seen standing over both the first suspect and the victim.
The first suspect shoots the victim twice as he remains on the ground, before demanding he give up his phone password, according to FOX 32. the victim can be heard saying something and moaning in pain before the robber shoots him once more in the head.
Responding officers transported the 23-year-old victim to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.
As of Friday afternoon, authorities did not have any suspects in custody. Chicago Police Department said detectives are investigating the incident.
