A Florida woman was arrested on Wednesday after being accused of stealing over $10,000 from a fund created to pay for some Boy Scouts’ trip to Europe.
The 44-year-old woman, Robin DeRushie, who working as a district committee member for a Scout troop in Cocoa, Florida, was entrusted to deposit $10,385 in checks from donors into an account for the trip in January this year.
However, a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Post shows that DeRushie “pocketed the Boy Scouts money and made personal purchases.”
DeRushie believed the money intended for the Scouts’ trip belonged to her because the donation checks had been written in her name, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deputy Tod Goodyear said.
“It’s a mistake in belief,” Goodyear told The Post Wednesday.
According to Goodyear, DeRushie used the money intended for the Scouts’ trip to take a cruise, pay for passports and cover her mother’s credit card expenses.
DeRushie allegedly spent the money after the trip was canceled due to coronavirus. When the donors asked her to return their money, DeRushie allegedly refused to give it back.
On April 26, a complaint was filed against DeRushie, leading to her apprehension a week later on a charge of grand theft of $10,000 or more, a third-degree felony.
DeRushie was released from jail Wednesday after posting a $2,000 bond.
