Authorities in Chicago are investigating two separate murders that occurred a day apart at an apartment building. One of the two victims was a University of Illinois student who was expected to graduate next week.
Officers found the body of the 23-year-old student, Brittany Kinlow, on Monday at the Belle Shore apartment building, FOX 32 Chicago reported. She suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was declared dead at the scene, authorities said.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office has ruled Brittan’s death a homicide.
A day after Brittany was found dead, investigators also found the body of 26-year-old Jovan Cabrera, inside an eighth-floor apartment as they were executing a search warrant. This latter victim’s cause of death has not been released.
Each death is being investigated as an isolated incident, authorities said in a press conference on Wednesday. A police spokesperson told reporters that it has not been determined if the two victims knew each other.
Kinlow was expected to graduate from the University of Illinois on May 9, her aunt, Danielle Kinlow-Cephas, wrote on Facebook.
“Please keep our family in your thoughts prayers as we try to make sense of this senseless act of violence. Our hearts are torn to pieces,” the post said.
