Arizona authorities say officers responded to reports of an armed student at Verrado High School on March 16.
According to Buckeye Police, no one was hurt as the student was apprehended, and the gun has been recovered. Deputies have given the credit to a school resource officer and other personnel who helped in taking the 15-year-old male student into custody.
Police said there was an incident that led up to the arrest.
“He…reached into his pocket, so safety personnel immediately detained him, they grabbed him and took him down to the ground,” said Buckeye Assistant Police Chief Bob Sanders. “About that time our officers arrived and everyone together took the handgun into custody, and they took the kid into custody.”
According to Buckeye officials, there is no threat to the school or community.
“Buckeye police are investigating why the student brought the weapon to school and how he obtained it. Investigators are reviewing surveillance camera footage and interviewing multiple witnesses. The Buckeye Police Department Crisis Response Team responded to assist school staff as needed,” stated BPD officials.
The School District dismissed students for the day. Counselors will be on campus on March 17 for students and staff. The teen’s name has not been revealed.
