Authorities in Philadelphia said they have apprehended the man suspected of stabbing two employees last weekend at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art. Philadelphia police say they arrested 60-year-old suspect Gary Cabana while he was asleep on a bench at a Center City bus terminal early Tuesday morning. He was taken into custody without incident.
On Sunday, the NYPD released a graphic video that showed Cabana leaping over a reception desk at the museum and stabbing two employees on Saturday. Both victims were aged 24. Cabana got furious after his membership card to the Manhattan museum had been revoked.
During a press conference prior to Cabana’s arrest, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller said:
“He became upset about not being allowed entrance and then jumped over the reception desk and proceeded to attack and stab two employees of the museum multiple times.”
Cabana’s membership was revoked because of his involvement in two separate incidents of disorderly behavior at the museum lately, Miller said. On Friday, he received a letter explaining that his membership has expired. However, Cabana visited the museum on Saturday demanding to watch a film.
“When they said I couldn’t go upstairs to see STARRY STARYY NIGHT EVER AGAIN I lost it,” Cabana told a New York Post reporter via Instagram.
Cabana attacked both victims, a man and a woman, and a third person behind the counter managed to escape. The victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital and were said to be in stable condition later Saturday.
After the attack, Cabana had been on the run. Philly police received tips from New York police that Cabana might be looking to get a bus to visit a relative, according to the Post. Station security was informed and spotted Cabana around 1 a.m. Cops arrived soon after and the stabbing suspect was taken into custody.
“I’m not a bad guy,” Cabana allegedly told Philly cops, according to the Post. “I just snapped.”
As officers escorted him into a waiting car, Cabana praised the city’s police department, saying, “I appreciate you guys, really. I really do,” footage recorded by WTXF-TV shows.
Prior to his arrest, Cabana opened up to a New York Post reporter on Instagram on Sunday night.
“Best cops in the United States over here,” he said. They just made the United States safe. I’m public enemy number one,” and laughed.
