A furious Florida resident has written a scathing letter to their snowbird neighbors: The note simply says: If you’re woke, go back to New York.
Over the weekend, a letter was placed on the windows of several cars with New York license plates parked on Palm Beach streets. The notice urged them to leave the state of Florida if they lean left politically, police said.
The notice, which is typed in all capital letters, reads: “If you are one of those ‘woke’ people — leave Florida. You will be happier elsewhere, as will we.”
The threatening letters were placed on a number of cars parked along Sunrise Avenue, Bradley Place, and Seaview Avenue that’s long been a beloved location for New Yorkers who travel south for the winter.
On Sunday, the letters were reported to the Palm Beach Police Department by concerned citizens. However, after a brief investigation, authorities determined it was not a crime.
During a phone call with the New York Post on Wednesday, the department’s public information officer Capt. William Rothrock said:
“Residents were concerned about the lack of civility and respect for personal property. We understood that concern and that’s why we started to look into the matter but we determined … it was non-criminal in nature.”
“As uncivil as it may be and not characteristic of our community, it is not a crime,” Rothrock added.
Rothrock did not confirm the number of cars that had been targeted but said only vehicles bearing New York plates received the note.
While the nasty letters were not considered criminal, some residents took the notes as less-than-welcoming. A former New Yorker leaving in Palm Beach told the Palm Beach Daily News that:
“America was founded on freedom of religion and thought. We have seen that there are many people willing to follow through on such dangerous and threatening messages. This behavior is another sign that our democracy is in peril.”
