A jury awarded a South Carolina woman $10 million for the injuries she sustained after stepping on a rusty nail at a Walmart store.
April Jones was injured while shopping in the central aisle at a Walmart store in Florence, S.C. in June 2015. She sued Walmart after stepping on a rusty nail in one of the company’s stores.
As a result, Jones eventually had her leg amputated after undergoing multiple surgeries. Jurors were told during a five-day trial last week that Jones lost one of her legs due to an infection caused by the rusty nail.
As a result of an infection, doctors then had no choice but to amputate Jones’ leg above the knee. Jones initially had to have her second toe on her right foot amputated before three more toes were then removed.
For the past six years, Jones has been in a wheelchair and has to rely on her adult children, according to her attorney.
Before awarding Jones the sum of $10 million, the jury deliberated for almost two hours. Jones is spending part of the money on prosthetics and the rest to make her home more wheelchair friendly and cover her medical expenses, her lawyer told the Post.
“The jury sent a message to Walmart that if you come into Florence County and injure one of their own, they will make sure that person is taken care (of),” Roy Willey, one of Jones’ attorneys from the Anastopoulo Law Firm, said in a statement.
“We are forever grateful.”
