A Lubbock, Texas man was shot and killed when he tried to pick up his 9-year-old son from his ex-wife. Chad Reed was shot to death by his ex-wife’s partner after a tense argument over their child custody arrangement. The incident was all caught on cell phone video.
The incident occurred on November 5, according to attorney Matthew L. Harris, who is representing the victim’s widow. Harris says the footage was filmed by Jennifer Reed, the widow of Chad Reed.
Jennifer Read has filed a petition demanding to take custody of Chad Read’s children from their mother, Christina Read. Jennifer has also filed suit against Kyle Carruth for shooting her husband to death. And according to Fox 34, Jennifer is currently seeking $50M in a wrongful death lawsuit.
Jennifer Read claims there was no physical threat to life or property during the argument. She also insisted that Carruth should have tried to de-escalate the confrontation instead of using a gun. Chad and Jennifer Read went to Chad’s ex-wife’s place of business trying to find his youngest son, the lawsuit states.
As Chad was trying to find where his son was, Carruth “interjected himself” into an argument he and Christina were having, the suit claims. The lawsuit also claims Christina kept violating their custodial arrangement.
Jennifer Read shared a mobile phone video of the deadly confrontation last week, which shows the argument, and Carruth going into the home then returning armed. The video has since gone viral.
“The decision to take this step has not been easy, and she respectfully declines any requests for interviews at this time,” a press release from Harris reads. “There has been a lot of speculation in the media, and on social media, regarding the events of Nov. 5, 2021.”
Carruth’s attorney, David M. Guinn with Hurley, Guinn & Singh, said the shooting was self-defense, according to KAMC.
“All Texans may lawfully brandish a firearm to protect themselves, their property and their business.” Guinn said. “When Kyle did that, Chad Read advanced on him.”
