A Virginia woman has been arrested after stealing a good Samaritan’s SUV with five children still inside. According to authorities, the woman stole the car after the driver stopped to help those involved in a multi-vehicle collision in North Carolina on Sunday.
According to the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), a man stopped to help when he witnessed the incident of a multi-vehicle collision in Grandy. Soon after exiting his vehicle to check on the people involved in the accident, the Virginia woman, Markell Hancox, jumped into the driver seat of the man’s SUV and stole it with his five children still inside, the CCSO said.
Hancox headed north on Caratoke Highway and pulled into the Hop Inn in Grandy, where she jumped out of the SUV and started running. However, she was swiftly apprehended by Currituck deputies. Police confirmed the five children inside the vehicle were not harmed but were highly shaken.
Hancox, who was charged with five counts of second-degree kidnapping, leaving the scene of an accident, and theft of a motor vehicle, is currently being held at the Currituck County Detention Center. She has been placed under a $210,000 bond, authorities said.
