Police, on Monday, arrested a Florida man who allegedly killed and buried his girlfriend. The 37-year-old suspect from Lakeland, Jason Robinson, is also accused of attacking a cop who attempted to handcuff him at the couple’s residence. Robinson and his girlfriend reside in unincorporated Polk County, about 50 miles southwest of Orlando.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Robinson phoned his mother and confessed his crime to her. His mother then contacted the Auburndale Police Department at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, telling them her son has killed his girlfriend.
When a PCSO deputy arrived at the couple’s home to do a well-being check, Robinson didn’t give the officer his real name and date of birth. The deputy, however, recognized Robinson because, before arriving at the scene, he looked up his photograph.
The deputy confronted Robinson and began to detain him with handcuffs. Robinson, however, resisted the arrest by attacking the deputy violently, the sheriff’s office says. He struggled to remove radio and Taser on the deputy and attempted to choke him to death.
According to authorities, two witnesses came to the deputy’s rescue as they helped place Robinson in handcuffs. By the time other deputies arrived at the scene, they had noticed a small table with two chairs sitting on a pallet next to the RV door. According to the sheriff’s office, there was freshly disturbed dirt on the pallet.
Authorities confirmed they found the victim’s body underneath the pallet. Robinson was arrested on six charges, including first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting with violence, and depriving an officer with means of communication and protection.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, in a statement, expressed his gratitude to the two witnesses who jumped in to aid the deputy during the violent fight with Robinson. Judd said that if those two didn’t get involved, things could have been much worse than it already is. He also extended his condolences to the family of the victim.
In the state of Florida alone, Robinson’s prior criminal records include 19 felonies and five misdemeanors. Authorities said he also has an extensive criminal history in Mississippi, North Carolina, Delaware, and Illinois. Robinson has been to prison four times already, police said. He was recently released from prison in January this year.
