The western U.S. state could soon hold a referendum on the dismissal of its once very popular governor, whose star has faded with his decision to impose strict health restrictions to stem the pandemic. The authorities must confirm by the end of April that the number of signatures required (around 1.5 million) to organize this “recall ballot” has indeed been reached. If so, a referendum will need to be held to ask California voters whether they want to replace Gavin Newsom, who has been in power since 2019, and if so, by whom.
