A 7-month-old Georgia baby girl tragically died after she was attacked by a family dog in Augusta. The deadly attack occurred at the family’s home in the city of Martinez, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
The seven-month-old victim, Serenity Garnett, was being watched by her great-grandmother when the American Bulldog attacked them, according to local sources. Both the elderly woman and the infant were transported to the hospital for treatment.
The infant was declared dead at the hospital as a result of the injuries she suffered during the attack, Coroner Martha Lappe said, per WJBF-TV.
The great-grandmother’s condition is not critical, said officer Maj Steve Morris, who also added that the motive for the attack remains under investigation.
Neighbors told the outlet that the dog is very hard to control.
“She didn’t have the strength to deal with that dog,” Stephen Fox said of the woman with the infant. ” … When he got out occasionally it was very hard to get back.”
The Sheriff’s Office said the dog is undergoing rabbit testing, but there was no immediate infectious disease concern.
